| Healthy Relationships by Norma Dearing |
It has often been said “love is not a feeling; love is a decision and a commitment.” You will not always feel like loving your spouse, children, siblings or parents. Our emotions have a tendency to fluctuate due to our hormones, sleep patterns, blood sugar levels, stress or the behavior of the other person. There are difficult people in our lives and often it will feel like we are trying to interact with a porcupine. If such a relationship is governed by the way we feel about a person, disastrous consequences can happen. Better relationships are often achieved by seeing others through the eyes and heart of Jesus.
There was an occasion when I was very angry with a family member. I cried out to God saying, “I really do not love this man. In fact, right now I don’t even like him!” In answer God spoke to my heart with: “You do not have to love him with your human love. All you need to do is to love with my love that is living within your heart.” Through prayer and obedience I truly was able to love him again with a greater love than ever before.
The Healing Touch receives calls every night requesting prayer about, and for relationships. Many are calling with trouble in their marriages or with children or extended families. Others call about conflicts with colleagues or neighbors and sadly, dissention within their churches. Though the circumstances vary widely, God’s answer is usually the same: “Love them with my love, and try to see them as I see them.”
So, how do we pattern our love commitment to others in a way that emulates God’s love for them? The following is a list of suggestions:
1. Do not criticize or belittle your spouse, family member, colleague or neighbor in
front of others. If you have an issue that needs discussion, do it privately, with prayer and forethought.
2. Do not gossip, talk about or criticize others behind their backs.
3. Never disclose secrets that have been shared with you by another.
4. Avoid financial conflict if you are married, share housing or are in business with another. Have a pre-plan in place. (For example, my husband and I agreed early in our marriage not to purchase anything over $100 without discussing it first.)
5. Do not let anyone play you and your spouse, family member, colleague etc. against one another. Be cautious of those who like to cause dissention.
6. Be flexible and learn to compromise. A healthy relationship should be fifty-fifty, without dominance, control or manipulation.
7. Make no renovations or huge changes unexpectedly or without discussion. I once prayed with a woman whose personal office was moved to another room while she was on vacation. She felt totally violated.
8. Recognize we all have different personalities, gifts and talents. Try to see the positive attributes in the people around you.
9. Learn to patiently listen to what others are saying. While they are speaking, do not be thinking about what you want to say.
10. Pray for God to bless, guide and direct you, and for your relationships to be healthy and under the ultimate control of the Holy Spirit. |

Thanks so much for speaking and praying with me last night/early this morning. We spoke regarding the pain and confusion I am experiencing due to a divorce proceeding, and the unfaithfulness of my wife. Let me tell you, I see how powerful prayer can be. Shortly after I spoke with you, I was in prayer, and felt the holy spirit come over me. The experience was like none before. It almost felt like an out of body experience. As I praised God I felt such contentment, such peace and exhilarating sense that I can only describe as ecstasy. What an amazing experience of healing and reassurance. Thank you for your kind words and prayer, and to the listeners that prayed along with us.
